The New Vista Care Home
The New Vista Society owns and operates the New Vista Care Home, a 236-bed licensed, accredited residential care facility. We provide professional care and support services for our residents in a home-like environment. Using strategies to combat helplessness, loneliness and boredom, we strive to meet the needs of the whole person with skillfully chosen programming and activities for our seniors.
Specialty “villages” for those with moderate to severe dementia provide a safe environment for those with cognitive challenges to meet their complex needs with dignity.
Admissions to New Vista Care Home are managed by Continuing Care in your Health Authority. Costs are subsidized and based on income, not assets. Please refer to Continuing Care Services in your Health Authority for any inquiries regarding admissions or you can call Burnaby Long Term Care at 604-918-7447.
If you or a member of your family are scheduled for admission to the New Vista Care Home, we have created a booklet that contains further information.

Built in 1975, the New Vista Society Care Home is a four-storey low rise building located in a beautiful, quiet neighbourhood in the Edmonds area of south Burnaby. Modernized in 1993 and continually upgraded to meet today's standards, our Care Home accommodates seniors needing complex care.
Residents are assisted by a Resident Care Coordinator on moving in. Basic furnishings are provided and residents are encouraged to bring some of their own belongings, such as a favourite chair, pictures, small TV and/or radio.
The Care Home is divided into five villages, each providing optimal levels of care to meet the unique needs of each resident. Meals are prepared on site in our state-of-the-art kitchen and are served in each village in common dining rooms. We also have a cafeteria where visitors can join with their family member and purchase lunch or dinner, the New Vista Café.
New Vista has taken great effort in creating a home-like atmosphere for our residents and have designed each village to promote a sense of comfort and wellness. Each resident has a private room with a bed, a bedside table and a dresser.

Care at New Vista includes standard nursing care plus physiotherapy, art and music therapy, recreational therapy and Chaplain Services.
In addition residents have access to an optometrist, foot care nurse a dentist, hearing clinic, and a massage therapist.
New Vista follows the Eden Alternative, a philosophy that believes that loneliness, boredom and helplessness account for most of the suffering of residents in long-term care facilities. As an Eden Care Home, New Vista is committed to fighting these plagues and providing a creative and fun habitat for its residents by promoting friendships, meaningful activities and independence. The Eden Alternative uses plants, animals and visits from children whenever possible. New Vista became the first Eden Alternative Care Home in BC in 2000.
An antidote for helplessness is to provide opportunities for giving as well as receiving care. Pets live at New Vista and we have cats, fish and birds as well as several lovely gardens. Residents who are able are given the responsibility and assistance to help care for the plants and animals. Boredom can be alleviated by doing away with the ‘same old routines’ and by ensuring spontaneity in day-to-day life.
New Vista maintains a number of varied programs including a Seniors-for-Seniors volunteer program where tenants from New Vista’s apartments and seniors from the community volunteer their time. The program is a popular success and people in the community continue to give their support.
The Care Home has weekly social activity groups that include Tai Chi, walking, gardening, reading, singing, baking and art therapy (see therapy programs for more information). There are outings every week.
New Vista strives to create a homelike atmosphere for our elders while offering a number of programs including the Wellness Program that also benefits residents in our housing complex. This program includes a soup and sandwich programs for residents in the Winch and Vista Towers, an English program for those tenants whose first language is not English, blood pressure clinics and income tax clinics.
We encourage families and friends to spend time with their loved ones who reside at New Vista and we are committed to ensuring our residents are respected and well cared for. Many residents at the Care Home are represented by the Resident’s Council.
